I'm at the age where I'm excited to see someone my age in the Olympics. Super excited when they win a medal, and there have been a few!

So in honor of the number 41, here are my answers to the questions that have been floating around LJ.

Questions and answers below the cut... )

Hey......so....it's been a while. Thought I'd try and get myself going again with the following questions snagged from [livejournal.com profile] fireheart13 and [livejournal.com profile] alexisjane:

1. Do you like blue cheese? NO. Gross.

2. Have you ever smoked? No.

3. Do you own a gun? No.

4. What is your favourite flavour? Butterscotch and/or caramel.

I said I was going to finish this, even if it takes to the end of January. Grr.

Still going...also, I'm writing like mad to get my Get Your Words Out goal accomplished this year. I've already signed up for a more ambitious goal next year. *headdesk* But that means there'll be lots of new fic over at [livejournal.com profile] zuben_fic soon!

Happy weekend-after-Christmas! Hope Santa was good to you and that everyone liked the gifts you got them.

Seven foods that I dislike. Well, last week I disliked pretty much all foods, because I had a sudden, excruiciating toothache that drove me to the dentist, where they took one look at the x-ray and said, yep, that's a decaying nerve under that tooth, come back on Monday for a root canal. So the weekend before Christmas was spent eating the softest foods I could find, taking as many ibuprofen as I was allowed, and waiting in eager anticipation (seriously) for the root canal. Now that it's over and my jaw has stopped aching from being propped open for the procedure, life is much better. I'm so grateful that it happened after the semester was over (though I did have to grade one class's term papers with a raging toothache, but they almost all got As for their final grades anyway, so wev) and before Christmas so that I could enjoy the day with Mr. Z and the 'rents.

I'm going to finish this even if it takes me till Twelfth Night, damn it. Till then, for those of you who celebrate, Merry Christmas!

Eight maids a-milking... )

I know the 12 days of Christmas aren't till later, and I missed the start of the month for an advent-calendar-type thing, BUT I saw this on meh-guh's tumblr and thought it sounded cool (slightly modified). Not sure I can pull off one per day, but let's give this a shot:

Drummers Drumming:Twelve facts about my holiday life
Pipers Piping:Eleven of my favorite things
Lords a-Leaping:Ten things I like about my personality
Ladies Dancing: Nine facts about my body
Maids a-Milking:Eight things I like about my friends

Geese a-Laying:Six quirks
Golden Rings:Five shiny things I like

Wow, I can't believe that song is still floating around somewhere in the back of my brain. Anyway, the LJ revival continues!

So [livejournal.com profile] dugindeep picked out five icons for me to talk about a while ago, and I finally got to it!

Stolen from [livejournal.com profile] mangacat201 and [livejournal.com profile] raeschae. I did this out of curiosity, and when a few of them had me cracking up, I thought I should share:

I consider myself tagged by [livejournal.com profile] raeschae and hereby declare you, the reader, tagged if you wish to be.

Using only song names from ONE ARTIST, answer these questions. You can't use the band I used (no matter how tempted you may be...LOL). Try not to repeat a song title. It's a lot harder than you think! Repost as "my life according to (band name)." Tag your music loving friends.

My Life According to They Might Be Giants:

Are you a male or female: She's Actual Size
Describe yourself: Mammal
How do you feel: Brain Problem Situation
Describe where you currently live: We Live in a Dump
If you could go anywhere, where would you go: Bed Bed Bed
Your favorite form of transportation: Boat of Car
Your best friend is: My Evil Twin
Your fear: Withered Hope
What is the best advice you have to give: Careful What You Pack
Thought for the Day: I Can't Hide From My Mind
How would you like to die: Hope That I Get Old Before I Die

So the summer is almost over...only one more week till classes start.  I'm mixed about it...this summer has been rough in a lot of ways, which has led to me retreating into my own little world, which is exactly the wrong thing to do.   On the other hand, I don't have much choice about getting out more and interacting more with people, because the semester's starting.  There's so much I didn't get done this summer that I wanted to, and now I have to cram it in this fall along with everything else...

On a happier note, I was walking home tonight and saw the bright red-orange star in the southern sky that's Antares, which meant I could trace a line to the west until I saw the vertical row of three stars that marks the head of Scorpius, take a north turn from the topmost of those three, and see a little star named Zubeneschamali.  :)

Anyway, in the interest of being more present, I jumped on board with [livejournal.com profile] raeschae 's icon meme:

So I've been working on an academic article about using tag clouds (or content clouds, more properly speaking) to analyze other kinds of texts besides web pages: like, how do newspaper articles from different regions compare in terms of their coverage of a particular issue?

And then I thought--wouldn't this be a neat thing to do to a fic?  It's a good way to see if you're overusing any words you shouldn't be, but it's also a fascinating insight into the structure of your story.

You can run a huge amount of text through TagCrowd at once:  I cut and pasted 140,000 words in and it didn't have a problem.  Here's some of my results (with possible spoilers):

From NUMB3RS fic:
The Fugitive )

Reverberations )

And from SPN fic:

Devil's Arcade )

Final Straw )

So I guess if I had to identify an overused filler word, it would be "around" or "away" or "going".  Sheesh.  I also appear to be obsessed with eyes and voices and other body parts, but you can't really blame me given the material I'm working with, can you?

Any other observations?   Want to make your own and post a link?  The stories I used are all over 25K words, but I'm sure smaller ones would work, too.

I consider myself tagged by [livejournal.com profile] izhilzha . Instructions: post one sentence from all of your WIPs without any context or further explanation. (I'm assuming this is only for fandoms I'm still active in? And that WIP covers anything I might conceivably post someday even if it's only a page or so right now?)

So here we go! I'm going to add the twist of two points each for guessing the fandom, two more for the speaker or POV:

  • "I'm here," he said again, fighting to keep his voice level. "You said you'd let him go."
  • "Fortunately, the Central Valley is about as topographically complex as a tabletop, so that eliminates the need for a submodel."
  • If it was only a matter of willpower, he knew they'd be fine.
  • He'd known this was going to come to a head at some point, but he hadn't expected to be doing seventy-five down the San Bernardino Freeway while he hashed out months of misunderstanding and hurt with the guy who had been his best friend.
  • Then, as the road started a broad curve to the left with nothing but empty air to their right, he reached down again for his leg.
  • He stumbled forward, and the hiss of something passing over his head confused him until he saw a chip of marble fly off the wall in front of him.
  • "Sheryl Crow obviously never tried to drive through the Westside on a Friday afternoon, or she wouldn't have put 'fun' and 'Santa Monica Boulevard' in the same sentence."
ETA: I need to start writing in a fandom with some lead female characters.  This is ridiculous.

[Error: unknown template qotd]For some reason I get asked this question fairly often...wonder why? *eyeroll*

Zubeneschamali (ZOO-ben-es-sha-MAH-lee) is the second-brightest star in the constellation Libra.  It means "northern claw" in Arabic because for Arab astronomers, it was part of the constellation Scorpius.  (Zubenelgenubi is its sister star; its meaning in Arabic is an exercise left to the reader.)  In the Northern Hemisphere, you can see it in the summer low on the southern horizon; it's relatively bright, even in urban areas.

I think it was during the summer before my senior year of high school when I came across the name three times within a few weeks: in an astronomy day camp I was volunteering at, in James Michener's Space, and I can't remember the third time.  But the name stuck with me because it was so unusual and because at that point in time, I wanted to be an astronomer.  A couple of years later in college, this thing called the Internet got my attention, and when I needed a username for various listservs and such, I figured it was distinctive, memorable, and would remain relevant for a long time.  I was right.  :)

Of course, I stll need to sound it out in my head pretty much every time I type it.
