Happy weekend-after-Christmas! Hope Santa was good to you and that everyone liked the gifts you got them.

Seven foods that I dislike. Well, last week I disliked pretty much all foods, because I had a sudden, excruiciating toothache that drove me to the dentist, where they took one look at the x-ray and said, yep, that's a decaying nerve under that tooth, come back on Monday for a root canal. So the weekend before Christmas was spent eating the softest foods I could find, taking as many ibuprofen as I was allowed, and waiting in eager anticipation (seriously) for the root canal. Now that it's over and my jaw has stopped aching from being propped open for the procedure, life is much better. I'm so grateful that it happened after the semester was over (though I did have to grade one class's term papers with a raging toothache, but they almost all got As for their final grades anyway, so wev) and before Christmas so that I could enjoy the day with Mr. Z and the 'rents.

1) Sushi. Whether homemade or in a restaurant, not my thing.
2) Chinese food, with the exception of orange chicken and the five-spice green beans at our local Chinese restaurant. (I realize these first two items make me seem like the sheltered Midwesterner I was growing up, but I love Thai and Korean and Indian and pretty much every other Asian cuisine.)
3) Avocado. I never had it growing up, but now that I have had it fresh in California, it's safe to say I just don't like it.
4) Brussels sprouts. I have memories as a kid of sitting at the dinner table after everyone else had already left because I wasn't allowed to leave until I ate my brussels sprouts. Mom should have made them with bacon. Mmmm, bacon.
5) Olives. Mr. Z loves them, so we usually get them on pizza and I pick them off.
6) Vegemite. Figured I needed to try it while I was in Australia, and hell no.
7) This is hard because I really like food. Let's see, I don't like mayonnaise or mustard. Those are only sort of foods, but there's two of them, so I'm done!

*runs away screaming*

Vegemite. Figured I needed to try it while I was in Australia, and hell no.

An Aussie friend once sent me a container of vegemite, and yeah, I'm totally with you. Blecch. Ditto on the sushi. D:

Sorry, should I have warned for dental content? :/

I always feel like I'm being judged when I say I don't like sushi, so I'm glad to hear there's others who agree!

Glad to hear the tooth's all better, tooth stuff is always nasty, no matter what.

But good god, I'm seriously almost afraid to ask... but what exactly is Vegemite? It sounds like anti-critter spray or something. Is it some form that food should not come in, like that dreadful thing Americans do to eggs in bottles (I could not believe my eyes when I found that, living there. Seriously, eggs is a food that already comes with its own storage container, for Pete's sake)? I pre-disgusted and intrigued.

A variation is in Europe - Marmite. And apparently also Vitam-R in Germany, according to wikipedia. It's a yeast-based spread for bread or toast, quite salty. Aussies will tell non-Australians to try it off the spoon or spread it on thickly, but in reality most Aussies would only eat a very thin layer or 'dabs' on toast or bread.

I dislike it myself, but a lot of Aussies seem to love it.

Uhhhhhhhhhh... yeah, no that'll get a pre-emptive pass from me if I ever make it to Australia, thanks. Thank you for the clarification!

Eggs in bottles?

And yeah, it's funny how something so tiny can hurt so much. :(

I'm not sure whether that's a US-wide thing, but the corner of Georgia i lived in definitely had it... like, you know eggs for scrambled eggs only... pre-whipped and filled into bottles so you could just pour them into the pan with one swig. I was flabbergasted at the concept.

Oh, weird! I've only ever seen that with "egg beaters," or cartons of egg substitute or egg whites that are supposed to be healthier.

Ha, I like all these foods, except vegemite, which I have never tried. But I've had marmite -- blech.

So sorry to hear about your tooth. I'm glad you had that taken care of before the holidays. One of my coworkers had his wisdom teeth out two days before Christmas -- what a bummer.

I think it's the same thing. Blech.

I was afraid it was going to be a wisdom tooth, because I still have all of mine buried under the gums, but thankfully (!) it was only a root canal. Terrible timing for your coworker!
