I'm stealing the idea from [livejournal.com profile] dugindeep, but since I gotta be me, I went and found another 31 days list so I wouldn't have to post my picture, LOL. I know some of us are trying to revive LJ a bit, and here's my attempt. Actually, I've never managed more than a couple of posts a week, so this will be quite the accomplishment if I can do it!

Day One: The story of your life in 250 words or less

I grew up in the Chicago suburbs in a house with a white picket fence and was a nerdy, quiet bookworm. Mathletes was the best part of high school because it was okay to be smart, and I was darn good at math. Then I started college and found out, oh, this is what college math is. Wow, do I suck at it. I turned to geography, which I kind of already knew existed because my dad and grandpa taught it in middle school, but it just made sense to me. Places and landscapes and spatial relationships and maps and…yeah.

I went to grad school right after college; what else was I going to do? That was at the University of Minnesota, and I fell in love with the Twin Cities. But upon finishing my Master's, I didn't know if I wanted to commit to the Ph.D., so I moved to Boston with my college boyfriend and worked as a transportation engineer. After a year and a half, I knew I was destined to be a nerd for life, so I went back to Minnesota for my Ph.D., leaving my fiance behind.

Then my husband and I moved to California, where there was a series of adjunct positions and jobs I left after a year or two, and then this university in the Midwest offered both me and Mr. Z jobs six years ago, and here we are. Sorry if this read more like an extended resume than a life story…but my life pretty much is my job, so there you go!

Hey, I didn't know you lived there? Did I know that? Hope the recent storms weren't too bad for you.

We're over in the NW corner of the Cities where 494 and 94 merge. We've been here for 6 years and I love it. We were just far north enough that the storm that took out all the power missed us a bit. We've been really lucky so far......knock on wood.

Awwww, even if your life is your job, you can tell that you love it, which is awesome! :) I hope to have a job I feel that way about someday. If I can ever figure out what I want to do. (People always told me that by 30, I'd have my life figured out. I'm starting to side-eye them, because that line is looming ever closer, and nope, still got nothing. :\)

Also, I love the LJ revitalization effort. I hope it goes somewhere, beause dammit, I still hate tumblr, and I miss chatting with my friends here. >_

Well, that's a nice spin to put on it. Thanks! :)

I hope it goes somewhere, too!

Paging back through journals in an attempt to catch up with folks and found this. Live the concept and the few of the 31 entries I've caught so far! And one thing that struck me in this, since we first connected around common Chicago roots, was the Twin Cities connection. I did my undergrad there, at Macalester College (and the now-husband was at U of M).

Hey, cool! I have a good friend who teaches at Mac now. I lived in Highland Park my first two years in the Twin Cities, down around Montreal Ave, and loved it.
