31 Days: Seven and Eight

No good reason this time for getting behind, but here's two in one again.

Day 7: The thing(s) you're most afraid of.

There's two, and they're kind of opposites. The first is fear of dying alone. I have no siblings, I'm not terribly close to my cousins, no kids and not likely to have any, and all but one of my friends lives at least two hours away, so it's just me and Mr. Z. Fortunately, his family is very long-lived, but I still fear being by myself in my later years, being one of those solitary people in the nursing home who has no one to visit them or care about them.

At the same time, I have a big fear of cancer. My mother's mother died of it when I was only 5, and one of the earliest memories I have is of my mom collapsing when she got the phone call. I figured out a few years ago that the big squick I have concerning horror/sci-fi where something bursts out of someone's body, especially after having incubated there, is probably related to this fear. The thought of my body being taken over by something else...it's a pretty obvious connection, I guess.

Day 8: A piece of advice you have for others.

If you have a big goal or a big task, break it into small pieces. Do a little a day, every day, and you'll get there. That's how I quilt, that's how I trained for a half marathon, that's how I write novel length fic. At the same time, don't beat yourself up if you don't get a little done every day; things come up and get in the way. Just keep at it.

Pretty original, huh? :/

Excellent advice!

My biggest fear is related to yours. I fear developing dementia and being unable to live alone but refusing to admit it, due to brain issues. And then slowly declining through years in a nursing home as I get more and more decrepit and needy...

Now you've gone and depressed me. I shall have to seek out some fic (or start writing some) to cheer me up!

Ugh, that, too. Although I hear that people with dementia are not necessarily unhappier as a result, because they don't know what's going on. (helpful!Z is helpful).

I was just hit by a brilliant idea: a Fangirl Retirement Community. We all hit our late 70s and we'll move in together for chibi art classes, 5pm buffet dinners, daily euchre tournaments, and group rewatches of Seasons 11-14 of SPN.

I'll be there, but if you take my pudding one more time, I am rigging your trope bingo card so that every square is kidfic, infidelity, or MPREG. *grumpiest old lady in the nursing home*

Noooooo! Anything but that! (Just be sure to remind me during snack time. I'm getting forgetful in my old age.)

Yes! I would totally sign up for that.

Also, how did I not know that you play euchre? <3

Eh, I dabble. :D

(I'm sure I'm no match for a mathematician, my card-tracking skills are crap.)

Best thing I learned in mathletes was how to play euchre. :D

*smooch* I can understand those fears

That really is good advice. As a procrastinator, I leave everything at the end *sigh*

*snuggles*

Oh, I do plenty of that, too. ;)
